U.S. Speaks Up on Mexico Stamp Controversy

WASHINGTON – The White House on Thursday objected to a postage stamp issued by the Mexican government, saying that “racial stereotypes are offensive no matter what their origin” and have no place in today’s world.

  1. I don’t get it. The U.S. has successfully challenged and continually challenges the racist aspects of its own society and now is trying to get Mexico to see the error of its ways.

    What I find particularly fascinating is your inability as a bronx native to see the inherent offensiveness of the stamp nor your inability as a poet to connect to some larger humanity where this type of thing is not tolerated.

  2. First off- The stamp is an affront to any person of color. Period.

    However, I don’t see the US as succesfully challenging its own racism and its call to Mexico is a hypocritical press moment smoke screened as a flash of social conscious.

    As a Bronx native, I see all kinds of offensiveness between Afro-centric cultures and attempt to make a difference with a blending of styles in my own poetry that seeks to make a change locally before moving on to fixing the international government policies.

    But that’s just me and my corner of the world.
