Poetry by Dusk/Party by NIght

please refer to the previous post for details on the reading tonight at cornelia street. i actually plan on toning down some of my normal stage antics in favor of a poem after poem, story after story, slow build of a larger narrative type deal OR i may just ask “is there is no one else?!?” (which i did at the last acentos, i have video but sadly no sound) either way, its gonna be something new for me since most of my new work has been a revelation or more like remembering an old dream. ya know what i mean? (ding! the nebulous bell)

on the flip side- mah main homie, the starsky to mah hutch, the jerry to mah deano, the chuleta to mah apple shawsh, el profe himself, will be doing his thing which always keeps me at the edge of mah seat. we also have a tendency to flip roles so perhaps he will ask “remember a time when kings read their own poetry?!?” or sumthin like dat

and after the party is the after party… though not in the hotel lobby.
it will be goin down at B1 as Raj and crew will be throwin it down for a free (ya heard? FREE!) jam with drink specials and wings and bodies doin figure 8s and such

me, i think after the feature i may have a partial sip of some scotch to celebrate but thats providing i nail the set which is your last teaser to come on down and check out the hotness

love ya like if wah wuz mah favorite flavah jelly bean

dare to be different

i recently had the only WDRE flashback moment. if ya dig through the archives ya can find my eulogy to the only station that i’ve ever known with a real music personality*

but i was able to find a list of past “Shreik of the Week”s (listener voted best debut song of the week)
on a guess, you can say that Ballad Of Peter Pumpkinhead by XTC (Jun-92) would be when when the vision gang started listening hard to DRE. of course, not everyone was happy with our choice of R.E.M. over A.B.C. or Midnight Oil over WuTang but they eventually fell in line and were soon BEGGIN for some good Live

you can find the full list of Shreiks here and some of personal faves – excluding the usual suspects Morrisey, Smiths, Depeche, U2, Duran Duran, Pearl Jam, Nirvana, etc – are:

I Know What Boys Like Waitresses 1-Dec-80
Tempted Squeeze 1-Jun-81
I Melt With You Modern English 4-Aug-82

The Look Of Love ABC 1-Oct-82

No One Is To Blame Howard Jones 3-Mar-86
Oh, L’Amour Erasure 1-May-86
Bizarre Love Triangle New Order 1-Nov-86

Glad I’m Not A Kennedy Shona Laing 2-Aug-87
The Great Commandment Camouflage 4-Nov-87
Route 66 Depeche Mode 1-Feb-88 (i know, i know but this single gets ZERO play on the radio)

and one of the all time so fuckin hard to find DRE singles of all time:
Tasmin Archer’s “Sleeping Satellite”

* SIDE RANT: close 2nd goes to the late 70s version of WKTU. new yorkers should not confuse this as an endorsement to the current incarnation of those call letters which is the most nutra sweet on a peppermint stick god awful taste in ya mouth “dance” music available to the ultra-hip NJ & Long Island crowd. back in the dizzay, Paco would be the night DJ on WKT(we love)U or KT(jus for)U.

and the only other station in these here parts with some real life & breath was the old WNEW with its all talk format anchored by the raunchy Opie & Anthony, the loveable Ron & Fez and the camraderie of the Radio Chick crew but dats another rant

i’ll buy that for a dollar!

nps 2005 roomie, ed garcia, has updated his website. aight! he also updated some pics including this one from chicago nationals.

a bit historic as this is the first time i kidnapped lovella (the headlocking would begin just a few moths later)

also in the pic is jerome from tejas, a pinoy brother that was hella cool at nats but then disappeared from the radar.

maria, ed, rich & seve (on lookout patrol) are also in the house which was a chi town greasy spoon servin some mad cheap fries & assorted grease items. as this was the time before gout was a major issue, all i could say was “pass the chili dog with celery salt, pickle & onions!”

on the outside i was having a ball but mah soul was all kinds of fucked up which is the only explanation i have for the Sean Penn like scowl on my face.

today has me up in the hudson valley enjoying my present company and some fine fine brasillian cuisine which included grilled chicken, sweet corn, lettuce, eggs, bacon & cheese on one mutha of a sandwich!

love ya like dano loves a wrestling match

* sleep is overrated. in “la bamba” ritchie valens meets el curandero and is told that the waking world is a hoax and the only things that count are the dreams that speak to us in the night. werd

* check out jeremiah alexis’s short synonymUS film (Aurally Spoken) over at Current TV. you have to log on to view it but its well worth the 30 seconds. if ya like it, give it the greenlight. film available here

* as the glow of ‘burque fades i am seriously questioning my continued involvement in slam. the fact that i cant stand to be called a slam poet hasnt changed a bit despite actually hearing some good to great poems at nats and some group pieces that were more than just extended comedic skits. soon the individual competition at NPS will be phased out and we can all look forward to more group pieces which (in this observers opinion) means we can also look forward to less poetry. aint nothing wrong with group pieces but i like em much better when they are on a real stage and called theatre versus being put on a slam stage and called high art.

* magdalena gomez has an interview over at the ny latino journal

RKM: Did you grow up speaking both, Spanish and English?

MG: Yes. I grew up having an opinion. But I grew up voiceless. Not only voiceless but punished for having a voice, having an opinion. I was not allowed to choose my own clothes. I was not allowed to be with friends. I was held hostage. I had no social life. I was the school geek and I had to learn to physically defend myself because of that. I knew the importance of the voice, that’s where the body comes in, because my interior world was the only place where I could live. So I made sure that I stayed sane. My mother was a physical abuser, my father was a verbal abuser and he was withholding of love. So I needed to create a place where I felt loved, where I felt important, where I wasn’t alone anymore.

the rest of the interview can be found here

* crazy WDRE flashback: The The’s “Dusk” with personal faves Love Is Stronger Than Death, Dogs of Lust & Slow Emotion Replay

You’ve gotta work out your own salvation.
With no explanation to this Earth we fall
On hands & knees we crawl
And we look up to the stars
And we reach out & pray
To a deaf, dumb & blind God who never explains.
