it was a lil weird being out in califas after the execution of stanley “tookie” williams. reading the sf chronicle brought some more issues to light than the news that i was getting out here in new york.

the bottom line- martyrs are always more dangerous than activists and the state went out and created a martyr anyway. clearly they do not believe that tookie’s legacy of activism will outweigh his more infamous (alleged) formation of the crips. one sf quote stuck out, most fellas out here dont even know who tookie is (or something like that, forgive the paraphrasing) that last statement looks to hold a lot of water when young folk in the street have little to no knowledge of pre-tv activists like w.e.b. dubois or marcus garvey. the same kids that love to remind us that the “revolution will not be televised” but have no idea of the trials & tribulations of gil scott-heron.

ima get off the soapbox since even though i grew up in the projects of the bronx, i am as un-gangster as it gets. a better authority would be luis j rodriguez; poet, author & former gangster. also, quite the open spirit & gentleman. his thoughts on tookie and more are over at his blog. y’all should check it out.

BNN: New York Minute

WEATHER: it is a sweltering 45 degrees as we speak! break out the sun block! snow and slush gave way to freezing rain last night as i was holding my breath throughout the car ride home.

CURRENT EVENTS: transit strike delayed till tuesday. came this close to sleeping over at work and they dont even come through on their threat. or maybe they did, my normal 70 min commute took almost three hours today. even worse than having to deal with that is havin to deal with the resident loud mouth who insists on yelling at the public service announcement speaker.
we are currently experiencing delays…
of course we’re experiencing delays! tell me what i dont know
… service being re-routed to…
to mah house! dats where it should be sent to

i think i would take this strike much more seriously if the president of the transit workers union did not look so damn much like cedric the entertainer.

Blogverse: You make the call!
Which one is Roger Toussaint and which is the new Ralph Kramden?

next time the workers who handle how i gets around the five boroughs wants to hire one of the orignial kings of comedy, i am suggestin they get Bernie Mac. jus sayin.

LITERARY: following up a wonderful week where i got to check out nick carbó read; saw the BEST worst attended reading ever: the kenneth rexroth tribute with suheir hammad, jessica hagedorn, patrick rosal & bob holman (among others) reading; and one of my favorite poetry couples, jai & elana rock out at the bronx council reading, i have attended ZERO readings this week. so it goes.

HOROSCOPE: (cue the Walter Mercado voice)Gemini, you will find that home is truly where the heart is.
ok, i made that up. but its how im feelin.

SIGNOFF: new york, i love you but its feeling like time for a new adventure…

winter wonderland

this mornings hell in sub-zero form has nicley morphed into a lovely december day in new york which means it is still WAY too fkcin cold for this south american.

i am a full blooded ecuadorian, born at zero latitude to loving parent who never had to endure a sub 50 day in their lives, hence my genetic makeup is suited for tropical climate.

but, in a pinch, i will happily do with the weather of northern califas ;-)

ah yeah, its dat time again. where all my worries melt quicker than slush on fifth ave as i enjoy the weather of the bay and the love of my life.

fiesta tonight at the snack-box (feliz cumpleaños jibaro!)
fiesta tomorrow at the make out room (get yo minds out da gutter!)
fiesta in fremont at the p/filipino p/food p/fest (battle of the al(p/f)ha dawgs!)

love ya more than maradona loves the hand of god*

* yep! ecuador made la copa mundial! dats da world cup to all you silly americans who dont dig futbol. remeber, decolonialization begins at home

rough seas ahead

heard quite the interesting report yesterday. as to how at a recent reading, a group of poets were to be introduced individually at the beginning of the reading. everything went smoothly except that one poets name was left out from that opening intro- yusef komunyakaa.

then i hear about another reading where poets where invited to share work from two other poets as the image of the poets being honored is proudly displayed. now, take a guess who is the only poet that comes out and has no images displayed behind her?
is it sonia sanchez who chose to honor audre lourde and lucille clifton?

now i am going back to a recent reading where i was asked about strategies towards getting “those people” to show up for a reading since i might be more in touch with the needs of “your people” and what “my people” may want to hear.

flash back further to the dinner where i was asked “what kind of poet” i am.

the waters ahead are choppy like a mofo and show no signs of getting better. smooth seas feels more like the doldrums and all i can ask for is the occasional port to rest

with all that in mind, here is today’s mantra poem

Poem 34 from "C Train (Dream Boy's Story) and Thirteen Mexicans: Poems" by Jimmy Santiago Baca

No matter how many poems you tear up,
no matter how you use all your power and money
to quiet the voices of freedom,
to diminish their poetry, to discredit them,
to exclude them from your reviews,
to burn their videos, to trash their audio tapes,
to use language as a weapon to destroy their integrity,
to label them, stereotype them as vulgar or obscene,
no matter how many academics you pay
to parrot your politics in book reviews and scholarly papers,
your fear and hysteria and accusations
will not silence their voices,
will not stop their words from reaching the people,
their free minds and golden spirits will always triumph,
will always be discovered
by people struggling to live with honor,
by dancers and singers seeking vigorous expression,
by painters enchanted with color and metaphor,
   philosophers dazzled by original insight,
and teachers who want to instruct without compromise.
